HISTORICAL NOTE ON THE
INDIVIDUAL CHURCHES IN INDIA
The Indian Church is a communion of three individual churches:
Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara.
The apostolic
letter of Pope John Paul II of May 27, 1987 to the Bishops of
India paved the way for starting three Episcopal Bodies in India.
The CBCI however, continues to function "for questions of common
concern and of a national and supraritual character" as specified in the papal letter.
